Biografi
Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Camille Gustus developed an affinity for photography at age fifteen. Camille grew up with the photographs of her grandfather’s travels, a man who captured historical moments such as the U.S. Navy just before D-Day, a man who inspired Camille to preserve her own personal historic moments in a photograph. Since her youth, Camille has viewed the photographic image as a burden of truth, a burden that we, as driven humans, are bound to.
After completing both her BFA and MFA in photography at MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art), and studying under well-noted artist William Larson, Camille’s work continued to evolve. Work that began as portraiture and family and figure studies transformed into photographic alternative processes such as cyanotype prints, Van Dyke prints, and liquid emulsion. Camille’s work represents her need to “break out of the rectangle;” one can experience her personal connection to her work, but also develop one’s own sense of life outside of the figurative box. She continues to work intricately, situating her images onto fibers, furniture, glass, metal, wood, and any other alternative archival surface. Camille’s work has been featured in a one-woman show at the Frederick Douglas & Isaac Myers Maritime Park and Museum, and as a Public Art Piece in the Pentagon City Subway Station. Camille’s work has also been published in the text "Reflections in Black,” the first reference book on the Photographer.
Her work is sought out by eccentric collectors to investors and has been recognized throughout by great royals such as Prince Edward who admired her unique approach to mixed media at a private exhibition. Currently, Camille is the Chair of the Upper School Visual Arts Department at the prestigious McDonough School in Baltimore Maryland where she embellished her students with the philosophy of the infinite boundaries of self-expression through art.
